Organisations are totally dependent on what has been described in various ways as their most important asset, their people. The satisfaction of this asset is paramount as its direct impact on productivity and profitability cannot be over-emphasised.
Every organisation in this regard considers employee satisfaction as a very crucial aspect of their overall strategy and their objective is to ensure that their employees are content.
Employees are also constantly looking to work for organisations that can guarantee satisfaction, one that will strive to provide them growth, happiness, success, challenges, self-awareness and a balanced lifestyle that will be fulfilling and rewarding at the same time.
In view of the positive aspects of job satisfaction, it is only prudent that an organisation considers ways of raising the satisfaction of their employees, work fervently towards improving performance and pushing for productivity and profitability. Satisfaction they say is an end in itself.
Below I provide my strategic approaches for boosting job satisfaction within the organisation.
Employees must understand and feel that they are being fairly paid. Employees who generally feel that their organisation’s pay structures are unfair tend to be dissatisfied with their jobs and hence do not give off their best. Apart from their full Salaries employees also want to be sure that even fringe benefits are consistent, competitive and in line with overall industry rates. It is only when employees are sure that they put in their best, exhibit loyalty and generally internalize corporate values and culture.
Job satisfaction can be boosted through effective supervision. Job satisfaction is highest when employees believe in their supervisors. Employees will put in their best if they believe that their supervisors have the technical know-how, and the competency to execute projects. They also want supervisors who will treat them with respect, and have their best interests at heart. Employees who believe in their supervisors tend to idolize them, see them as mentors and strive to impress them. It also means that there should be clear open lines of communication between employees and supervisors. Performance appraisals must be consistent and effective feedback be obtained from the employees. This way employees feel they are making inputs towards their overall career development.
Job satisfaction is high when employees believe they are actively involved in decision-making. Effective delegation entails allowing employees to freely participate in the process of decision-making. Employees must be assigned authority and responsibilities to enable them to grow. This way, employees believe that they can have some positive impact on their organisations by taking responsibility for their tasks and being recognised for their achievements.
Employee interests vary and rarely do people get tasks that they enjoy. Efforts must be made to assign employees tasks that match their interests. The likely results will be for employees to put in their best exhibiting high levels of Job Satisfaction and competency. People go the extra mile when they can fulfil their interests while on the job and this has a huge effect on employee job satisfaction.
Employees today demand more from their organisations and some of them have been known to leave due to dissatisfaction with their jobs. This has dire effects on productivity, returns and motivation in general. The onus, therefore, lies on organisations to make an effort and to spend time and money conducting research on factors that affect employee satisfaction most.
There is no doubt that satisfied employees make positive contributions to the organisation, drive productivity, help boost the morale of their colleagues and ultimately have a positive impact on customer satisfaction which underlines overall organisational success.
